RFID and NFC

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) refers to a technology for radio recognition of data without visual contact. An RFID system consists of a passive RFID transponder and an RFID reader.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)

The term RFID covers various frequency ranges and technologies that differ in their properties and areas of application. RFID inlays are very thin and flexible. They can be easily integrated into almost any label—whether for the automotive sector, automatic vehicle recognition, technical industry, logistics, retail or pharmaceutical industry.

In addition, labels tailored to difficult substrates such as metal, ESD, carbon, glass, or challenging environmental conditions such as heat, cold, enable functionality in challenging conditions.

NFC (Near Field Communication)

NFC (Near Field Communication) as a sub-area of RFID technology, is tailored to the exchange of data in close proximity with the smartphone. With both iOS and Android, it can be used to open an app or mobile website and transmit additional data.

Application Examples

  • Automatic identification of consumables
  • Automatic component identification or assembly identification in Industry 4.0
  • Lock-key applications: e.g. communication of material with the machine
  • Service documentation and product lifecycle management
  • Data acquisition of containers, trays, racks in logistics and empties management
  • Batch tracing in production logistics
  • Service documentation on the component
  • Access control and vehicle identification for parking management or on toll roads
  • Contactless data transmission with highest safety requirements

Frequency and Reading Range

Depending on the application, the respective frequency and read range of the RFID-label is selected. Both HF tags (read range 1 to 40cm) and UHF tags (read range up to 15m) can be identified, read and written using handheld readers or permanently installed system/hardware solutions. NFC (read range 1 to 5cm) enables data exchange between NFC tag and a smartphone.
