70 Years: From M. Schreiner to Schreiner Group

2021 is a year in which Schreiner Group celebrates a special anniversary. The high-tech company based in Oberschleissheim near Munich has now been in existence for 70 years. Since it was founded, Schreiner Group has evolved from a small craft business to an internationally positioned high-tech producer of specialty labels and self-adhesive functional parts. Automobiles, pharmaceutical products, industrial assembly components or official documents: there’s hardly an area in which the wide range of Schreiner products cannot be found. Today, the former label printing business produces practically anything that’s adhesive, innovative and multi-functional. RFID and EIF (Electronics-in-Film) products in particular have become increasingly important and show how digitalization has changed the label industry and keeps raising Schreiner Group’s innovative prowess to new levels.

The Beginnings

Established in a garage in the west of Munich on October 1, 1951, the company’s two founders, Theodor and Margarete Schreiner, managed to produce and sell their first embossed seal stamps and labels right in year one. To reduce the costs of printing blocks in those days, they utilized etched metal stamps replacing the previous commonly used engravings.

In the wake of the utilization of self-adhesion technology by their son Helmut Schreiner in the nineteen-sixties, the product portfolio was increasingly expanded and the company renamed into “Etiketten-Schreiner” (“Schreiner Labels”). “Word of our total commitment to helping the customer and to finding a solution had soon gotten around and helped build our reputation as a problem solver,” says Roland Schreiner, today’s President and CEO, “and because we serve industries that emphasize functionality the number of companies turning to us with special requests kept growing.”

The Move to Oberschleissheim

In 1993, the forward-thinking move to today’s headquarters in Oberschleissheim followed. After previous sites in the city of Munich had finally become too small, the decision was made to establish a completely new plant. While just one building existed a little less than 28 years ago, Schreiner Group in Oberschleißheim encompasses six large office and production buildings, two parking garages and several smaller facilities today.

The Third Generation

In 2012, Roland Schreiner–representing the third generation--took the reins. Even before that, he had been shaping the company with ideas of his own. For instance, as President of the Schreiner MediPharm business unit, he was responsible for the pioneering launch of the production site in Blauvelt near New York City (USA) as far back as in 2008. Recent years have seen Roland Schreiner continuing to drive the company’s internationalization and, in 2015, a third production site was opened in Fengpu near Shanghai (China). In Germany, Schreiner Group kept growing as well. In Dorfen (county of Erding), another location has been in existence in the Munich metropolitan region since 2019. Today, more than 1,200 people are employed at the four international sites, generating annual sales of around 190 billion euros.

The Business Units

In 1984, the company began focusing on the engineering and general industry sector, which marked the birth of the subsequent Schreiner ProTech business unit producing nameplates for overprinting using IT systems, dot-matrix or thermal transfer printers. Recent years have seen an increasingly stronger focus being placed especially on the Mobility sector and, in addition to the Automotive business, New Mobility has taken center stage. The product portfolio includes labels for e-scooters and e-bikes, heater solutions for camera systems and antennas for autonomous, connected and sustainable driving, and more, as well as products for wound healing treatments.

1988 produced the first contact with a pharmaceutical company for which Pharma-Tac, a hanger label for infusion bottles and world first was developed. From then on, the company specialized in the needs of the pharmaceutical industry with a dedicated business unit, the predecessor of Schreiner MediPharm. In 2009, the market launch of Needle-Trap followed. This unique needle protection system for prefilled syringes consists of a label-integrated needle trap and has been used more than 1.1 billion times worldwide. In recent years, the business unit has increasingly expanded its activities to the entire high-potential “Healthcare” market, producing labels with new security functions, RFID-Labels for tracking purposes and automation or sensor solutions for monitoring medication adherence, and more.

For the Austrian Autobahn Operator (ASFINAG) and for the German Social Security Fund (DRV), Schreiner developed exciting self-adhesive products suiting their specific needs: the “autobahn vignette” toll sticker and the photo protection film for the social security card. Both fall into the “Safety and Authentication” industry segment for which the third and most recently added business unit, Schreiner PrinTrust, is responsible. RFID solutions have been gaining increasing traction in a wide range of fields in the new millennium. For instance, the business unit produces the electronic parking sticker for the city of Vienna, solutions for digitization and automation in warehouse logistics and various labels for smart city applications. Since 2019 the company has been producing self-adhesive plates for e-scooters and now for mopeds and other small motorized bikes as well.
