Recommendations for the Transport, Storage and Processing of Labels
Transport and Storage of Label Rolls
- Protect the label rolls from exposure to sunlight and heat (e.g. radiators)
- Store the label rolls in the PE bag or shrink wrap of the original packaging in a cool and dry place until used and avoid extreme temperature fluctuations (optimal conditions: 64 °F ± 9 °F/18 °C ± 5 °C, 40–60% relative humidity)
- Stack the label rolls on top of each other, lying flat and centered
- Prevent external pressure, e.g. by too tight packaging or weight from above
- For extended periods of intermediate storage during production, store products with particularly free-flowing adhesives in cool boxes, if possible at 50–54 °F/10–12 °C.
Preparation of Label Processing
Instructions for the Cleaning of Receiving Surfaces
- The mounting surface must be dry and free of dirt, oil residues and release agents.
- Loose surface particles and oxidation layers reduce durability as a bonded joint is always only as strong as its substrate.
- Recommended cleaning agents are grease-free solvents such as isopropyl alcohol (1:1 mixture), acetone, MEK or cleaning solvent. Please test the substrate for compatibility with the solvent before use. In case of incompatibility of the processing surface with the chosen cleaning agent, please switch to another product.
- Plastic materials may leak plasticizers that can have a negative impact on adhesive properties.
- Surfaces can have varying characteristics and show different adhesive strength effects.
General Information on Label Dispensing
- Apply contact pressure to labels after application (e.g. with a squeegee, pressure roll or pressing fixture) to ensure adhesion.
Manual Label Dispensing
- When dispensing labels manually please keep in mind that skin lipids and “parking” of the labels on work clothes have a negative effect on adhesive properties.
Automated Label Dispensing
- An acute angle of the dispensing edge improves dispensing (stripping) performance
- Keep the dispensing edge burr-free
- Keep all movable elements of the web/tape guide running smoothly by cleaning regularly
- Keep optical and mechanical scanning elements clean and dust-free
- Do not subsequently tighten the label rolls – either manually or inside the printing or dispensing system
When Using Thermal Transfer Printers
- Remove dust from the inside of the printer regularly when changing rolls
- Do not touch the printing areas when changing rolls; it is best to touch only the beginning of the roll, wearing gloves if necessary.
Specific Information for RFID Labels
The following should be avoided:
- Electrical charges above +/-2 kV peak maximum
- Alternating magnetic fields
- Gamma rays
- Folding or unnecessary bending of the ((rfid)) label
- Strong contact pressure or impact on the ((rfid)) label
- Tossing of the roll or inadequately protected shipping (use special cardboard or sufficient dunnage
