Electroluminescence: a new dimension in automotive lighting

Two specialised suppliers joined forces to create a “tangible experience of innovative design” in the interior compartment of a Porsche Cayenne. The project combined exclusive automotive textiles from Strähle+Hess with ambient electroluminescent (EL) lighting from Schreiner VarioLight. The resulting interior of this Porsche Cayenne show car sets new standards in the area of automotive design. It is being presented to automobile manufacturers and automotive suppliers until the summer of 2008 to let potential customers experience the possibilities of innovative design elements with all their senses.

Areas like the Porsche Cayenne’s footwell and the textile headliner are backlit by blue EL lamps and the effect of the ambient lighting makes the armrests in the doors appear as though they were suspended in the air. “Our EL lamps emphasise the styling and design of the car’s exclusive interior materials. They create a completely new spatial effect,“ says Christian Schreiner, managing director of Schreiner VarioLight. Unlike conventional sources of light or LED lamps, EL lamps only require a few millimetres of depth for installation. This gives designers a high level of flexibility to adapt them to the existing assembly conditions in the vehicle. Completely new styling options using EL lamps will make interior light a distinctive design element of future automotive interiors.

“We were immediately convinced that Schreiner VarioLight’s EL lamps have powerful design potential. As a specialist for technical textiles in automotive engineering, we use this potential to offer our clients even more exclusive solutions than in the past,” says Kirsten Schönharting, managing director of Strähle+Hess. It is planned to exhibit the show car at the next International Motor Show ( IAA) in Frankfurt.
