Laser Technology Enhances Efficiency
Innovative Manufacturing Process for Airbag Wraps
To ensure the reliable deployment of side and head airbags in case of an accident even years after installation in an automobile, airbags are covered by special wraps. Airbag wraps are high-tech products, which have to meet exacting safety specifications. In the past, their production involved several process steps. Particularly sewing the continuous non-woven material to create the hose-type wrap was a time-consuming process. Now, Schreiner ProTech has developed a technology that enables the production of airbag wraps in two possible forms by means of a one-step process: a new machine at Schreiner prints the non-woven material, cuts it to size using a laser, and either folds the material and laser-welds the wrap, or laminates a self-adhesive strip to the “open” stock. The “open” stock version is converted into a closed wrap during the customer’s assembly process where the material is bonded by means of the self-adhesive strip. These comprehensive, forward-thinking solutions promise to deliver maximum process reliability and cost efficiency.
Higher Levels of Flexibility, Speed and Customization
A number of additional benefits make this technology particularly attractive for customers in the automotive industry. For example, the use of laser technology enables the definition of any desired cutting or welding contour. This means that very complex geometries and customer-specific processing requirements can be implemented quickly and flexibly without additional tooling costs. To fully meet the process and production requirements of its customers, Schreiner ProTech develops tailor-made value-added solutions as needed. For example, such solutions enable in process-monitoring of safety-relevant parameters like dimensions and break-open forces of the tear seams, ensuring reliable production results at the highest level of quality. Schreiner ProTech’s innovation has already proven its viability in the automotive industry. This creates good prerequisites for further growth in demand as the technology is suitable for all manufacturing processes of industrial products where continuous sheets or non-woven materials are cut to size and processed.
