Portfolio enhanced by new anti-counterfeiting technology

“BitSecure” is the new digital authentication feature in Schreiner ProSecure’s security technology portfolio. The German specialist for self-adhesive marking solutions in the field of product and document protection acquired the copy detection pattern technology [invented by MediaSec Technologies GmbH] from the worldwide Thomson Group as of March 16, 2009. The strategic acquisition supports the company’s systematic expansion of its market position as a provider of product and document protection solutions.

The BitSecure counterfeiting protection feature can be cost-effectively integrated into existing packaging and marking solutions. It is suitable for use on nameplates, product labeling, tickets, admission passes and similar items. The technology’s centerpiece is a high-resolution noise pattern featuring details which cannot be detected by the naked eye. Any attempt by a product counterfeiter to copy the printed original results in measurably impaired quality. While the original pattern is generated directly from the original high-resolution file, potential counterfeiters have no access to the file and can thus only use the printed pattern for copying. This reduces the pattern’s accuracy in any attempt to counterfeit it as important optical details are lost in the process.

High counterfeiting protection with minimal effort

The differences between an illegally reproduced BitSecure print image and the original can be easily and quickly detected using optical readers and thus reliably reveal any fake. The required technology is relatively simple. Conventional scanners, modern camera cell phones or 2D barcode readers with respective test software or an online connection are suitable for use as testing equipment. Armed with such equipment, distributors, retailers or consumers can authenticate a BitSecure-marked product anytime and anywhere in the world.

The highly dissected noise patterns can be conventionally printed or, if required, lasered directly onto the substrate within an extremely small space. This makes copy pattern technology equally attractive for direct marking and combination with 2D barcodes which enables simultaneous identification and authentication. In addition, it offers the benefits of smooth integration and user-friendly testing technology at high levels of anti-counterfeiting security. Therefore, the copy detection pattern technology refined by Thomson perfectly fits Schreiner ProSecure’s product and solutions portfolio.

The right partner for copy detection pattern technology

As a division of Schreiner Group GmbH & Co. KG in Oberschleissheim near Munich, Schreiner ProSecure specializes in high-tech products for authenticity and value protection. The company develops and produces anti-counterfeiting and tampering protection solutions for card providers, the pharmaceutical and engineering sectors as well as for the consumer goods industry and public-sector clients. As a development partner, Schreiner ProSecure designs system solutions for effective protection from counterfeiting and tampering as well as for monitoring the supply chain. With the “BitSecure” copy detection pattern technology Schreiner ProSecure now offers another highly capable security technology as part of its portfolio. Schreiner ProSecure acquired the technology from the Thomson Group headquartered in France. The worldwide leading provider of video solutions for the communications, media and entertainment industry used this technology for copyright protection of pictures and film footage.

Logical step in global growth strategy

However, the potential of this solution far surpasses this particular field of usage: In combination with other security features such as holograms or customized color-shifting inks, BitSecure is a forward-thinking element for product and document security. To successfully use this element for its customers, Schreiner ProSecure takes advantage of its extensive partner network as well as the requisite technologies to develop combined overall solutions tailored to the demands of the respective application. Therefore, the acquisition of all the rights to copy detection pattern technology represented a logical step in the company’s growth strategy and an investment enabling Schreiner ProSecure to continue expanding its position in the field of product and document protection.
