Security seals for PIN-pad terminals
Retailers and their customers increasingly often fall victim to clever data thieves tampering with point-of-sale (POS) PIN-pad terminals to skim account data and associated PINs of numerous customers in one go. In many cases the alteration of the card reader is only noticed after customers’ bank accounts show unauthorised withdrawals of funds, which can severely damage the reputation of the merchant operating the terminal. A security seal from Schreiner ProSecure now makes it easier to detect tampering with card readers, thereby helping to prosecute the culprits.
The seal on the casing protects POS PIN-pad terminals from undetected tampering by providing an easily visible indication of any attempt to access the card reader’s data. This is achieved by an equally effective and intelligent combination of various security features. The special seal is equipped with a so-called VOID effect: as soon as someone tries to open or detach the seal, a customised warning message appears. This message remains clearly visible even if the fraudster should remove and re-apply the seal exactly in its original position.
A complex security perforation increases the seal’s protection against non-destructive removal. The special material composition even reliably indicates tampering attemps using heat, cold or solvents. The department for “Materials-Based Security Technology“ of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has confirmed this and awarded the top anti-tampering security rating to the seal. In addition, Schreiner ProSecure offers a wide range of optional anti-counterfeiting features for this specialist product. Depending on the desired security level, customised holographic designs, security colour-shifting effects or covert taggants protect the seal from simple copying or more sophisticated counterfeiting. Available sequential or encrypted numbering supports reliable documentation and/or asset management.
