Needle-Trap—A Cost-Effective Needle Protection System for Pre-filled Syringes
Needle-Trap, a needle protection label for pre-filled syringes developed by Schreiner MediPharm, opens up completely new possibilities to pharmaceutical manufacturers. It consists of a label-integrated needle trap which serves to secure the blood-contaminated needle after the injection. The system is both user friendly and offers particular cost benefits.
The syringe label with an integrated needle protection functionality helps close a major safety gap in healthcare practice. Just in Germany, some 500,000 inadvertent needlestick injuries are sustained per year, according to expert estimates. These injuries harbor the risk of infections with hepatitis or HIV. However, conventional needle protection systems are relatively expensive. Typically, these solutions only provide a return on investment for the manufacturer when used with special pharmaceuticals. Therefore, Schreiner MediPharm developed Needle-Trap as a cost-effective alternative which helps protect healthcare professionals from needlestick injuries.
The self-adhesive specialty label has an integrated safety mechanism enabling the contaminated hypodermic needle to be secured after use. In extensive market surveys healthcare professionals have confirmed that the system is easy to handle: 94% of the respondents said that they would like to use Needle-Trap in their work environment. Thanks to its simple design principle, the specialty label can be easily integrated into existing production processes and delivers convincing benefits to pharmaceutical manufacturers such as low investment costs and minimal space requirements. Needle-Trap can be adapted to all standard syringe dimensions. It uses conventional packaging and can be dispensed by normal labeling lines.
Needle-Trap meets the exacting requirements of the US Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and has received 510(k) clearance for marketing in the US. The solution is both simple and ingenious and equally benefits manufacturers and users.
Needle-Trap can also be customized to feature additional functionalities such as detachable documentation label segments. This product innovation received the 2008 German Packaging Award.
