Needle-Trap by Schreiner MediPharm Wins “Best of Award” at Materialica Design & Technology Award Presentation

Oberschleissheim, November 17, 2011 – The Needle-Trap needle protection system by Schreiner MediPharm won the “Product” category of the 2011 Materialica Award, which earned this entry “Best of Award” recognition. The innovative needle protection solution for prefilled syringes consists of a label-integrated needle trap that secures the needle after the injection. This intelligent system is the first to feature the combination of an injection-molded part with a film. The Materialica Award was presented in Munich on October 18, 2011 during the Materialica trade fair. The “Product” category recognizes solutions in which either new or conventional materials are used in an innovative form.

“An ingeniously simple yet highly innovative product development,” said the statement issued by the Materialica panel of judges. “In addition to the primary protection mechanism, the intelligent manufacturing concept, the functional integration that has been achieved and the high design value were criteria for selecting this entry for ‘Best of Award’ recognition in the ‘Product’ category.” Due to the large number of participants and high quality of entries, this year’s competition was the first one to feature various award levels, the “Best of Award,” the “Gold Award” and the “Silver Award.”

Needle-Trap by Schreiner MediPharm helps prevent needlestick injuries, which reduces the risk of infections. The label-integrated needle trap is easy to operate for high user friendliness. It allows the creation of a safe work environment for healthcare professionals as required by EU Directive 2010/32/EU which aims to prevent needlestick injuries.

Leading pharmaceutical manufacturers are already successfully using this new needle protection solution and value the cost-efficiency of the syringe label that is easy to integrate into existing manufacturing processes due to its intelligent design principle. Needle-Trap can be adapted to all conventional syringe dimensions and uses common secondary packaging, which also benefits the environment. In addition, the product can be complemented by graduations or counterfeit protection features. The specialty label also makes it possible to document injections. For this purpose, the label is equipped with self-adhesive detachable label parts that are directly transferred to the patient’s medical records or vaccination card.
