Bayer Healthcare Opts for Seal Offering Supreme Comfort and Enhanced Security
Pharmaceuticals with Authenticity Guarantee
Today’s pharmaceutical packaging has to meet exacting demands. A high level of user comfort combined with safe handling is a key requirement. To provide physicians and patients with proof of the product packaging’s integrity and to make opening the pack particularly easy and comfortable for the user, Bayer Healthcare was seeking a specialty security seal for its highly successful product Levitra. The pharmaceutical corporation commissioned the experts from Schreiner MediPharm and Schreiner ProSecure to develop such a seal.
Samples of the ED drug Levitra are sent to patients and physicians. “We specified exacting requirements for the new closure seal. We wanted a seal that would be very easy to handle and suitable for multiple re-sealing of the box. In addition, we expected clearly visible evidence of “first opening” by a seal that could not be non-destructively peeled off the surface,” said Roland Kleissendorf, Head of Packaging Development at Bayer Schering Pharma AG. These complex requirements were to be met by a single solution.
The development resulted in a tailor-made Wallet-Seal incorporating additional functional features: a starter tab and an individual void effect. In addition, the seal uses a special adhesive adapted exactly to the particular requirements of the solution and the substrate.
The non-adhesive, handy starter tab facilitates opening the packaging. It is used to lift the void seal area, which allows multiple resealing of the wallet, from the substrate. When the seal is opened for the first time, the void message “OPEN” appears in this area. The message has a different color than the seal and remains permanently visible. To prevent undetected removal of the seal, the rear area of the seal is affixed to the cardboard packaging with a special, permanent adhesive. Any peel-off attempt thus causes irreversible damage to the packaging.
The development by the two experts for secure marking and closure solutions has resulted in a seal which meets exacting tamper and counterfeit protection demands. It is custom-tailored to the product packaging and optimally integrated into Bayer Healthcare’s manufacturing processes. In addition, the convenience and functionality of the Wallet-Seal enhance the packaging and thus contribute to Levitra’s success on the market as a comprehensive solution that adds value at all levels.
